The most widely used guns were Springfield and Enfield infantry rifles. They were single shot, loaded through the muzzle, and percussion fired. Both armies used them because they were relatively cheap and plentiful. Revolvers and carbines were used by the cavalry. Breech loading and repeating rifles and carbines, and cased ammunition were also in use but did not become standard until after the war. They also made extensive use of artillery.

When it was in the middle or almost over in the American Civil War we developed the gateling gun which the faster you gateled the gun the faster it would shoot. Then during the late 1800's through the early 1900's or middle of the Civil War we developed the lever-action rifle.

Canons were originally muzzle loading. They were developed as breach loading canons starting in the second half of the 19th century. These developed into canons with fixed ammunition and those with powder loaded into the breach after the projectile.
