How to Chrome Plate Properly?

Chrome plating is the technique used to produce a chrome product. Chrome is short for chromium. This is one of the naturally occurring elements. Chrome is not meant to be used in a pure form. In order for it to be useful, chromium must be combined with other substances. Steel is usually the bulk of the product. Then, a thin layer of chrome is added to the product.Oftentimes, people tend to think that any silver, shiny object is chrome. This is usually not the case. Shiny aluminum on a motorcycle is often mistaken for chrome. The stainless steel of a boat or tire rims is often mistaken for chrome also. It takes an experienced eye to recognize chrome plating. Putting the other metal beside the chrome object is a good way to tell the difference. When these two metals are side by side, the chromium plating will stand out significantly. This finish is simply beautiful. It is very impressive. Chrome plating reflects light better than most metals. The images in chrome are more clear and less distorted. In fact, it is almost like looking in a mirror.Furthermore, the shine of chrome is hard to duplicate. No other metal can really compare to the brilliance of chromium. Chrome is applied to a object using a process called electroplating. There are two types of chrome plating. One is called hard chrome. This type of application involves a heavy coating of chrome. Many parts in a car are made through this process. For example, cylinder rods and piston rings have a very heavy coat of chrome. This type of chrome is not particularly harder than chrome plating. The main reason it is called hard chrome is due to the thickness. Decorative chrome plating is very thin and can not withstand a hardness test. It will most likely shatter like an egg if a hardness test is conducted on it. Hard chrome is useful on steel or some other hard metal. It is not particularly attractive on wheels or bumpers. In conclusion, it is best to verify with the shop before getting chrome plating done. Many shops do only hard chrome, and most customers are not interested in this type of service.

Why are bath fittings coted with cromium?

Chrome plating (less commonly chromium plating), often referred to simply as chrome, is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal or plastic object. The chromed layer can be decorative, provide corrosion resistance, ease cleaning procedures, or increase surface hardness. Sometimes a less expensive imitator of chrome may be used for aesthetic purposes.Chrome plating a component typically includes these stages:Degreasing to remove heavy soilingManual cleaning to remove all residual traces of dirt and surface impuritiesVarious pretreatments depending on the substratePlacement into the chrome plating vat, where it is allowed to warm to solution temperatureApplication of plating current for the required time to attain the desired thicknessThere are many variations to this process, depending on the type of substrate being plated. Different substrates need different etching solutions, such as hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, and sulfuric acids(also called sulphuric acid ). Ferric chloride is also popular for the etching of Nimonic alloys. Sometimes the component enters the chrome plating vat electrically live. Sometimes the component has a conforming anode made from lead/tin or platinized titanium. A typical hard chrome vat plates at about 1 mil (25 µm) per hour.Various linishing and buffing processes are used in preparing components for decorative chrome plating. The overall appearance of decorative chrome plating is only as good as the preparation of the component.[1]The chrome plating chemicals are very toxic. Disposal of chemicals is regulated in most countries. Some common industry specifications governing the chrome plating process are AMS 2460, AMS 2406, and MIL-STD-1501.

Restoration Of Chrome Plating?

Chrome plating is hardly a matter of dipping an article into a tank, it is a long involved process that often starts with tedious polishing and buffing, then cleaning and acid dipping, zincating (if the part is aluminum), and copper plating. For top reflectivity "Show Chrome", this will be followed by buffing of the copper for perfect smoothness, cleaning and acid dipping again, and plating more copper, then two or three different types of nickel plating, all before the chrome plating is done. Rinsing is required between every step. When an item needs "rechroming", the process involves stripping the chrome, stripping the nickel (and the copper if applicable), then polishing out all of the scratches and blemishes (they can't be plated over and any scratches will show after plating), then plating with copper and "mush buffing" to squash copper into any tiny pits, then starting the whole process described above. Unfortunately, simply replating an old piece may cost several times what a replacement would cost. It's the old story of labor cost. The new item requires far less prep work, and an operator or machine can handle dozens of identical parts at the same time whereas a mix of old parts cannot be processed simultaneously, but must be processed one item at a time. If a plater has to spend a whole day on your parts, don't expect it to cost less than what a plumber or mechanic would charge you for a day of their time. If your chrome plating is peeling, this is virtually always a manufacturing defect due to insufficient adhesion of the plating to the substrate. Although exposure conditions can certainly harm chrome, and discolor it or make it pit, they won't make it peel! It can be very difficult for a plating shop to get good adhesion on some things (most commonly on alloy wheels because they are not pure aluminum), but if they can't do it they shouldn't sell it. If your parts have peeling chrome, you should complain and not be deterred by nonsense about chemicals in your garage, how frequently you wash the wheels, etc. Peeling chrome is virtually always a manufacturing defect.
