Toyota recommends SAE 0w-20 as the best choice for your Highlander in cold climates and for fuel economy. You can use SAE 5w-20 but it is not the best choice. You can only purchase SAE 0w-20 in a Synthetic Oil so you can extend your oil/filter change interval to at least 7,000 miles or 10,000 miles if you drive mainly highway miles. Do not use any other weight oil.
2008 Toyota Highlander 3.5L Oil Capacity: 6 quarts oil changed only. 6.4 quarts oil and filter changed. 5w20 for standard Highlanders, 5w30 for those with the tow prep package. Check your oil cap to know.
