Children didn't really have hobbies in the 18th-century; they went to school, did chores, and maybe played with friends. Some worked on family farms or in a family business. Historians tell us Alexander Hamilton liked to read. His mother had a collection of 34 books, which was a lot back then. Hamilton also helped his mother run a small store in Christiansted,
St. Croix,
in what was then the Danish West Indies (now part of the US Virgin Islands).
Hamilton's mother died when he was 13, at which time he went to work as a clerk at Beekman
and Cruger,
an import-export
firm that did business with the American colonies in New England. He emigrated to America at 17 to attend school and further his education. He didn't have much time for fun.
