What were Franklin pierce obstacles?

Mrs. Pierce did not like Washington, did not want to live there and did not want Franklin to run for President. She had had enough of Washington when he was a Senator. Then in January, not long before his term began in March, their only remaining child, Benjy was killed in a tragic train accident. She went to the White House, but spent most of her time upstairs crying.

Franklin's other personal problem was a long-time inclination to drink alcohol.

Franklin's political problem was his party leaders. Pierce was nominated from New Hampshire without much of a national following. He was not expected to be a leader and the bosses resented him when he tried. The nation was split by slavery and the civil war was not far away-- it was a hard time to be President.
