Hudson's name and fame are mostly based on the fact that a great river and bay are named after him. But as an explorer he wasn't much of a success. He was first sent out by the Dutch to find a nothern passage to the East around Siberia. He quickly got stuck there and turned instead to the west, seeing if he could find a northern passage above North America. He got stuck in the ice there as well and returned empty-handed.

In a second attempt to find a north-western route, he sailed into the bay that was to have his name later on. Native tribes informed him that at the end of the bay he could sail up a river that would lead him to another ocean. It later transpired that they mistook the Great Lakes for an ocean.

After having wintered in the region he wanted to press on, but his crew mutinied and cast him adrift in a sloop. Nothing was heard of him again. In his search for a passage he did however explore much of the northeastern Atlantic coast.
