Black men began voting in elections in around 1870.
Dating to colonial times, a "poll tax" was charged to anyone voting in elections, ostensibly to defray the cost of running elections. In the South, the true reason was to keep poor or indigent residents (largely African-American) from voting. When poll taxes were declared unconstitutional in 1966, many black-majority jurisdictions elected their first black officials.
