Maria Mitchell grew up in an atmosphere of learning. She went to a school where her father, William Mitchell, was the principal. He eventually formed his own school and Maria assisted him. He taught her astronomy at home where she was allowed to use his telescope, and she assisted him in his own astronomical activities. She went on to another school where she became a teaching assistant to Cyrus Pierce, the master of that school. She became a librarian and continued her observational activities. In 1847, Ms. Mitchell discovered a comet. This brought her a prize, world wide recognition, and a "way in" to astronomical work. Admission to scientific organizations followed, and eventually she became Vassar College's professor of astronomy.
