Pericles governed Athens from 461 until 429 B.C and this was called the Age of Pericles. His governance has three goals which are: to strengthen Athenian democracy; to hold and strengthen the empire; and to glorify Athens.

Security, prosperity and power.

He established an empire from the anti-Persian Delian League, extorted funds from them and and

used the money to glorify Athens and put half the people on public employment. He expelled rivals and established a radical democracy ruled by an assembly of the adult male citizens.

He maintained personal power by his persuasive oratory over the assembly and milked personal wealth for himself, family and close supporters. His ego knew no bounds and he led Athens into the devastating 27-year Peloponnesian War which stripped Athens of the empire Pericles had created.
