Stone Keeps
The first stone keeps were square but later they were built round. It would have one or two other walls around it to add defence with turrets as look out stations at some of the points. They were made out of stone which was a new thing for medieval England, it meant that the builders could build upwards and it also made it more protected. The bailey part of the castles was now the ground in between the walls and the keep, but the shelters were built on the inside of the wall so it did not take up too much space. There was often a moat surrounding the whole castle for extra safety.
Stone keep castles were built to impress. Any castle showed the power of the Normans especially if a bit of a town had to be knocked down to make space to build it. Some stone keeps were built in very important places for example in the tower of London. I think that this shows how powerful the Normans really were. They were also built for safety. People lived in them and used them to fend off attackers using their many advantages against them.
There are many advantages of the stone keep. One of the main advantages is that they were very safe because the walls were often up to 5 metres thick, which means that the walls were hard to knock down. Also they did not rot within a few decades, they lasted for many more centuries, and we know this because many are still around now. They did not burn because they were made of stone which means that objects thrown at the castle that were on fire were useless! Stone keep castles had very tall walls which meant that enemies could not throw fire arrows over them and also defenders were able to fire arrows back at them as they were above the attackers. They also had narrow slits near the bottom of the cast so that arrows could be fired out of them but could not be fired back inside. No one could climb through the windows as they were too thin. Lastly the drawbridge was thick so the attackers could not ram through.
There are not many disadvantages of the stone keep castle. The stone keep castle was expensive to build unlike some of the other castles like motte and bailey castles. They were very hard to build, only the most skilled workers could build these castles to make them last and they took a while to build. Square Keeps cost a fortune to build a king in Medieval England had about £10.000 to spend a year the castle at Dover cost £4,000 the castle at Rochester cost around £3,000 a year. all wrong

Shell keep castles are medieval fortresses that are usually built upon a motte. They are made from stone. Some examples of stone keep castles include the Round Tower on Windsor Castle and the Clifford's Tower on York Castle.
Stone or square keep castles were first built in Medieval England by William the Conqueror. Stone keep castles were the natural extension of motte and bailey castles. Motte and bailey castles were only temporary features (though many mottes exist to the day) while stone keep castles were built to last
