The word "demon" isn't used in the KJV Bible. Nor is "fallen angels." It does speak of those "possessed of devils," however... and when all is said and done... the "unclean spirits" [demons] that "kept not their first estate" [Jude 1:6] are the same "angels" who fought Michael and his angels in heaven and were cast out of heaven and "fell to earth." (Rev.12:7-9)

The Shikon no Tama, or Jewel of the Four Souls, emerged from the priestess Midoriko's body after a battle with a great number of powerful youkai (demons). Midoriko was an exceptionally talented priestess, with the "four souls" in balance within her: Friendship, Courage, Love, and Wisdom. She used her powers to purify demons, and was said to be capable of purifying up to ten demons at once. She was finally bested when several demons gathered into one, joined by the heart of an evil human who lusted after Midoriko, much in the same way Onigumo lusted after Kikyou to become Naraku. After a period of intense fighting, Midoriko realized that she wouldn't be able to defeat the youkai, and so she drew its evil power into her--ejecting the Shikon no Tama as both she and the demons died. Their battle forever rages on within the jewel, and the tides of the battle depend on the purity of whomever is holding it.
