Best Answer

Tolstoy thought that the peasants lived the best life possible, they were close to the earth so they were closest to God. The people that lived in the cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg were a fallen people. They were too fake, they worried more about appearance and following what was socially acceptable that they didn't see what was real anymore. High society had no appeal to Tolstoy. He preferred to work amongst lower society, peasants.
