Amputation
needles and knives with hot tips for stopping the blood from rushing out. Also bandages and sponges were used.
Amputation was the deadly medicine in the English Civil War. Infection would often sit in and kill the soldier after losing a limb.
Civil war nurses did not have very advanced tech. so they used only a few tools. they used multiple sizes of amputation knives they also used bullet pliers and needles Nurses didnt have much access to water or disenfectants, so they typically didnt clean their tools. they slept covered in blood on the floor, and didnt bathe for weeks. despite these conditions almost 75% of amputees survived. Anesthesia was just coming out and there was a limited supply, so nurses used whiskey or nothing at all. sometimes during amputation they would have the man bite down on a cloth to avoid him biting off his tongue or screaming loudly.
The most common surgery was that of amputation of either an arm or leg . This was done without the benefit of anesthesia or antibiotics . Gangrene often developed resulting in the slow agonizing death of the patient .
