The USN classified battle cruisers as LARGE CRUISERS (such as the Alaska class-12" guns); not wanting to imitate the Europeans. For the USN, under the Large Cruisers came Heavy Cruisers (8" guns) then light cruisers (6" guns).
"Battlecruisers" were large gunned and thin armored warships. "Battleships" were large gunned and heavy armored warships. Battlecruisers were designed for "speed" and "killing power" (large guns); and built to chase down and kill cruisers (especially raiding cruisers). 1. Battleships-heavy weight boxers/for knock down drag out fights 2. Cruisers-Raiding/Reconnaissance 3. Destroyers-Screening/Reconnaissance/Destroying submarines & torpedo boats/Liaison duties

Destroyers, Cruisers and Aircraft Carriers
The first cruisers were intended for individual raiding and protection missions on the seas. Cruisers were also used to escort convoys and sometimes battleships. the could also be used to attack enemy merchant vessels they could also be used in battle fleets and reconnaissance, they could also be used for anti aircraft ships.
It demonstrated that "Battlecruisers" shouldn't fight battleships...nor be used like battleships. Battleships are for "slugging it out" with other battleships; battlecruisers are for reconniassance, raiding, and killing cruisers.
Carriers, battleships, and heavy cruisers. Heavy cruisers had 8" guns, light cruisers had 6" guns.
The Battle of Midway, in which the Japanese lost almost all of their cruisers and battleships.
