Well back in mozart's time and other era's surrounding that period, men were castrated in order to keep their voices from getting deeper so they can sing female roles. It kept their voices somewhat "high-pitched" so that they can sing the alto parts. But im not completely sure why women were not allowed on stage so i dont want to give you an incorrect answer.
