In the 1780s, King Louis XVI of France faced significant challenges, including a severe financial crisis exacerbated by costly involvement in the American Revolutionary War. The nation's debt led to increased taxation, which sparked widespread unrest among the lower classes. Additionally, there was growing discontent with the monarchy and calls for political reform, fueled by Enlightenment ideas and the influence of the burgeoning Revolution. These issues culminated in a loss of support for the king and contributed to the onset of the French Revolution in 1789.
