President Buchanan became the Seceratery of State and Minister to great Britan after serving about ten years in the Senate, Tyler went from the Senate to become Vice - President of the U.S. under William Harrison. Tyler became President only one month after Harrison's death. (Butchman became President differently, he was elected President.) Three new states were entered into the Union, under Buchanan and that under Tyler, China opened it's ports to American trade and Florida joined the Union.
James Buchanan was never married. Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and Chester Alan Arthur were widowers and were unmarried while they were President.. Grover Cleveland was a bachelor when he took office, but married while he was President. John Tyler, Woodrow Wilson and Benjamin Harrison had their wives die while they were President and so were unmarried until they married again.
