The Great Depression affected orphanages because so many homeless people didn't have the resources to support their children. Some children in the orphanage were, in fact, orphans, but some where their because of tough family financial times. The highest number of children "enrolled" in orphanages reached a record high of 140,000 children.
They were difficult to maintain but they were run the same as any other time period.
