Most people in the world were worried about nuclear war breaking out during the Cold War because it seemed very likely to happen on a number of occasions.
The anger and chest-beating between the US and the USSR scared the whole world into thinking that direct, armed conflict was just around the corner, and such conflict would escalate into nuclear war in seconds. Both nations were stockpiling weapons at a fantastic rate, and there was no doubt in most people's minds that either side wouldn't hesitate to use them if given enough provocation -- and for most of the '50s and '60s, (and again in the early '80s) it wouldn't have taken much provocation at all.
And nuclear war definitely something people do not want.

Nuclear war is still possible, but it seemed more real during the Cold War. Yet, today we are entering into a New Cold War and most people don't realize it. Russia is engaging in working at getting back the Baltic states and most likely will be successful in the next few years.
