I'm not sure where their name comes from, but standard poodles were originally used to help fishermen, and the bubble cut fur comes from when it was to keep their joints warm in the water but also allow them to be more streamlined whilst swimming. Nowadays they are mainly just companion dogs and the bubble cut is solely for fashion.
