The Women's Institute was co-created by Adelaide Hoodless and Mr Erland Lee originally. They founded the Institute when she lost a young child due to unpasteurised milk contamination. He decided that women would benefit from being educated on health and hygiene and the importance of their role in keeping all the family safe from harm at home. He requested Mrs Hoodless to speak at his home to local wives and mothers and the first meeting of the Women's Institute was held.
