I will firstly start off with Concentration camps.

In the concentration camps, many people died. It was a horrible way of living, you ate only a few pieces of bread every few days, and you had to work ALL day.

Secondly, death camps.

Death camps were for mostly Jews but also the mentally retarded, the disabled and POW's. In death camps they would work till they die or get gassed to death in a room full of people.

The trenches were always full of stagnant water and mud. Soldiers were never able to dry out their clothes or feet. Underground shelters were little better, leaking constantly, and becoming as muddy as the trenches were. Sometimes they would collapse burying the soldiers inside alive. There was only cold, poor quality food available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every single day. Sometimes it was moldy or rotten from being stored in such unsanitary conditions. The soldiers were tormented by infestations of lice, flies, mosquitoes, and other vermin. Tens of thousands of rats swarmed through the trench systems, biting sleepers, attacking the wounded, and gnawing on the dead. Corpses of men and horses often laid for days before they could be buried adding to the stench and flies. Enemy attack was always imminent, and far off artillery would rain high explosive shells down on the trenches for hours at a time. Sometimes clouds of poisonous gas would drift across no-mans land, and anyone too slow to don their gas mask would be blinded and burned, their lungs reduced to shreds. The squalid conditions made disease inevitable, and more soldiers were felled by dysentery, typhoid, and trench foot than by enemy bullets.

There were various horrors in World War 1. For example, there was mustard gas which was written about by Wilfred Owen. Also the trench warfare. These tactics called for soldiers from both sides to assault entrenched soldiers only to be cut down by machine gun fire.

This is a long answer because it involves many parts of battle. In three major terms, it was from the new horrible weapons used, trench warfare, and sheer numbers.

First, weapons. Many inventions, such as gas warfare, airplanes and tanks were unleashed and killed many soldiers. Also, artillery ripped apart human bodies and killed even more. The technology had not evolved with time and mood about war.

Trench warfare was a horrific aspect of battle. Soldiers would literally camp and sometimes live in trenches, waiting for the enemy to come or get struck by artillery or aircraft. When soldiers were ordered to cross the land in between trenches, or no-man's-land, machine guns were often waiting to cut the infantry to a field of corpses.

Finally, the number of men who died was terrifying. About 9 million died in combat, and another 14 million were wounded in action. If you look at World War I photos of soldiers, you will see more gruesome pictures.
