In 1803, Napoleon sold the territory known as Louisiana to the US. Thomas Jefferson was the US president at the time and deemed the purchase to be a good deal. First of all it was inexpensive, a mere 3 cents per acre. It also helped the US because the newly purchased land almost doubled the size of the US. The vast amount of land involved was fertile land, good for crops and later good for mining. It was an additional benefit in that the large city of New Orleans was part of the deal.
