. The name “Molly Pitcher” was a nickname and it is thought her real name was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley. She got the nickname by carrying pitchers of water to soldiers. When her husband collapsed she took over his cannon. She died in 1832. There are so many different legends that historians believe her story is folklore or a composite of several people. After research and reviewing documents has led to the conclusion that she can’t be identified.
