Since the trail up to Machu Picchu is a long 30 mile hike, you want to be sure that you are physically fit for the climb. Get in aerobics work outs everyday, and focus on your legs and core. These are the main muscle groups your body will be using. It is good to take small hikes and carry the gear you will be taking with you. This way you will be more used to the weight of your pack.
They were called Incans. Built circa 1460, the name stands for "Old Peak". It was the main site for the Incan Empire. It stands 8,000 ft above sea level in Perú.
Safest location is hard to determine but the safest would probably be Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, and Nasca as they are popular tourist destinations. Try to stay in main tourist sections of the cities. In Lima try to stay in the area of Miraflores.

Additionally, parts of the site of Tlatelolco, another important Aztec city, can also still be visited.
