Protectionism deepened the decline in international commerce. In Germany, anger at economic conditions and loss of confidence in the Republic helped bring the Nazis to power. Japan sought to ease its problems by conquering Manchuria, undermining international security.
In the United States national income fell by 30% in real terms, millions lost their jobs, banks failed and farmers faced ruin as prices tumbled. The new Roosevelt Administration responded by devaluing the dollar and instituting a package of expansionary economic and social programs known as the New Deal. Many see it as a bold response which saved the US from further economic decline and social disruption, others as the start of an unwelcome increase in government intervention and spending.
