Tricky things, pinning down those responsibilities, when your a Greek Goddess, to Leto her daughter Artemis was a painless birth, and when the young goddess grew swiftly to assist her mother in the birth of her twin brother Apollo, she became in essence the goddess of the baby - Hera being the goddess of the mother in birth - while if boy the child would fall under Apollo's protection, if female, Artemis continued to watch over and protect the maiden until marriage where Hera then stepped in again.

Artemis was a virgin goddess, so never married and never had a child, thus no male held sway over her - for her father Zeus, King of Heaven, had granted her this right, and her brother Apollo abide by that choice.

It is well known that Artemis is a goddess of the wilderness, largely the mountains. She - not Apollo - was the goddess of the hunt. She had a host of companion nymphs and mortal maidens, who she led in song and dance. Along with being a goddess of health and healing (like Apollo), she was also a goddess of sudden death and disease.

Apollo and Artemis together were also gods of ritual purification - the cleansing of the impure stain of manslaughter.
