Some believed it was a punishment from God, some believed that foreigners or those who followed a different religion had poisoned the wells, some thought that bad air was responsible, some thought the position of the planets had caused the plague. There was no cure for plague, although a lot of people did some incredibly stupid things in the hopes that it would be. This was one of them.
Many things such as hanging a dead toad round your neck, lucky charms, putting a recently killed pigeon on the wounds, and smoking was thought to decrease the likelyhood of getting the plague.
