Criminals in medieval Europe had punishments that were very harsh, depending on the crime: such as being fined, put in the stocks, or hanged and burned. Criminals were punished in medieval times by being stretched on a rack or suffering a punishment that directly represented the crime.
Crinimals were treated (compared to today) very badly. They wernt allowed to talk, go outside, or see the light of day. All they could do 24/7 is stare at a blank brick wall. If they retaliated in any way, they were punished sevearly. The prisoners wernt even guarenteed food every day. This was all to demoralize any thought of commiting another crime in their life. If it were like that today, our prison system would be much underpopulated.
There were so many different punishments, depending on the Monarch at the time and the seriousness of the punishment. They were inconsistent with the handing out as well, so nobody can really answer.
