The black slaves helped the union in two ways. First, they escaped from the South bringing the confederate's economy down. And second, most of the blacks joined the Union army to help win the Civil War.
Some simply escaped to South to join the Union Army. Others would find ways to communicate with the Union Army to pass along information about the Confederate Army, such as troop numbers and positions.

In some ways yes, in some ways no. The American Army certainly has more money to spend, and it does, on unnecessary equipment. The British Army is smaller but much better organized, and it tends to get a lot more bang for its buck (I mean quid).

As soon as Union troops entered an area the slaves would runaway behind union lines. It was the policy of the army not to turn slaves over to their owners. They were referred as "contraband " because contraband doesn't have to be returned. Nearly 180,000 free black men and escaped slaves served in the union army. Yet, they did struggle with discrimination and were segregated in all ways. Often they had white officers. Watch the movie Glory to get a feel for this.
