During the latter part of the Hundred Years War, gun powder weapons were starting to be used in war, mainly cannons and very primitive rifle-like weapons.
The French under Joan of Arc seemed to have more of these than the English did,
who were still mainly using longbows and crossbows, and Joan's ability to place
her cannons at Jargeau on the Loire River resulted in an English defeat there. The
Duke of Suffolk was captured and many English soldiers killed in this battle in
June, 1429.
