All classes fought in the Roman military. The basic foot soldiers (the dog-face or the grunt) were generally of the lower social classes but the officers were generally of the upper classes. This was because Rome was a militaristic society and any young man who had any aspirations for politics or civil service simply had to have some military experience to point to as a type of qualification. The Southern Colonies were very similar to the times of the Middle ages. The plantation owners lived by a strict (yet warped because of slavery) code of morals based on honor. Below them would be the free whites who worked the lands themselves and were to poor to own slaves. Below these poor whites would be the indentured servants, who were workers who labored without pay in exchange for passage to America, freed blacks and finally the slaves. These social classes saw distinct lines between each other that were very rarely crossed and each group knew who their "Betters" were and paid them the "respect" due to their social standings.
