When peace was made between the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire, Athens converted the 180 cities it had led into an empire of its own. It used this power to try to dominate the Greek world, interfering in the affairs of other cities not in its empire. This brought it into confrontation with the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta. After collisions over Corcyra and Potidaea, it culminated with Athens' attempt to ruin economically its neighbour Megara, a member of the Peloponnesian League. Megara appealed for help, Sparta demanded Athens back off, Athens refused, war ensued.
