The US's goals in the War of 1812 were to drive the attacking British away, and keep the British from re-colonizing America. In the process, the White House was burned by the British, and James Madison lost his presidency.

The first answer was correct and factual. Stampeded by a group of legislators known as the War Hawks, the United States launched the war of 1812 to invade and forcibly annex Canada, something Thomas Jefferson called "a mere matter of marching." He was wrong. Canadian militia and natives made up 75% of the defenders -- the remainder being British regulars -- and that greatly outnumbered force inflicted a series of decisive defeats on the invaders, who fled back over the border and beyond, surrendering Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).

The other goal was to break the power of the Indian confederacy whose homeland blocked America's westward expansion. In that goal, the US succeeded, because the British abandoned their native allies.

There was never any possibility of Britain "re-colonizing" America. The British had just won a much, much bigger war against Napoleon. That meant hundreds of thousands of battle-hardened troops were suddenly available to sail to North America, if the British somehow wanted to reverse the revolution of three decades before, but Britain was war-weary. Although it held large chunks of US territory by late 1814, it was content with a peace treaty that simply returned to the old borders.
