An advantage to covered bridges is that they shield traffic from the elements (rain, snow, high winds, ect.). One semi-common disadvantage is that covered bridges tend to burn more easily than other types of bridges.

∙ 9y agoCover bridges, as a result of their shelter, keep roads relatively free of weather impediments like ice and snow, so road maintenance costs are reduced. The down side to the bridges is that they cost considerably more to build than uncovered ones do.

∙ 15y agoSince there are no covered bridges in the Southern states, I would think that the advantage is that it keeps snow off of the bridge during winter which makes it easier to cross and keeps it from freezing over with ice. Another advantage would have to keep the wooden floores of these bridges from rotting so quickly.Also due to the weather.
