A:Premodern Islam practised the systematic acquisition, organised training and professional employment of slaves in military service, everywhere from Spain to Bengal(and possibly farther), yet the practice had no religious, legal or institutional tie to Islam. Known as Mamluks ("owned"), they enjoyed a higher status than ordinary slaves and could even become sultans.
