November 11 was originally called Armistice Day after the end of World War I to promote world peace and honor the veterans of that war. After several more wars had occurred, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor veterans of all of the wars. There were a few more changes, but finally in 1975, Veterans Day was reestablished on November 11th and has been that way since.

The origins of November 11 as a holiday honoring soldiers can be traced back to the end of World War I. In 1919, Armistice Day was established to commemorate the armistice, or ceasefire, that went into effect on November 11, 1918. The day was initially dedicated to honoring the soldiers who fought and died in the First World War.
