∙ 9y agoThe candidates in the 1860 presidential election were Abraham Lincoln who was a republican and John C. Breckinridge who was a Southern Democratic. John Bell and Stephen Douglas were also candidates. Both Lincoln and Douglas wanted to end slavery.

∙ 11y agoIn the 1860 election, the Democratic Party split into two factions. The northern Democrats nominated Lincoln's perennial rival, Senator Stephen A. Douglas who wanted popular sovereignty to decide the slavery question in the territories.
The southern Democrats nominated John C. Breckenridge, who favored federal protection of slavery in the territories. Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate, was considered to be against allowing any new slave states. John Bell pretty much agreed with Lincoln. His party was made up of former Whigs and Know-nothings who did not want to join the Republicans.
