Captain Edward Smith had retired for the night, and was asleep in his cabin, along with First Officer Murdoch, second officer Charles Lightoller and Fifth Officer Harold Lowe. Chief Officer Wilde was serving as 'night captain' on the bridge, with Quartermaster Hitchens at the helm. Fourth officer Joseph Boxhall was serving as second-in-command for the night.

Frederick Fleet and Archie Jewell had newly taken over as nightwatch look-outs in the crow's nest, from Reginald Lee and George Symons, who headed off to their bunks to sleep. A minimum number of stewards, stewardesses and valets were working at clearing away passenger's supper things, emptying ashtrays, sweeping up, tidying the public staterooms, and polishing the shoes of 1st and 2nd Class passengers, along with being on hand to attend to any needs that any of the passengers might have in the night- they would also have woken the ship's doctor had any medical emergencies arisen.

Radio operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride were at work in the radio room, sending out requested messages to passenger's relatives for telegram delivery and monitoring the radio traffic of other vessels- including any further hazard warnings of pack ice or 'bergs. The night chefs, including baker Charles Joughin, were baking bread and preparing breakfast for the following morning.

The ship's librarian was checking in returned books and logging up newly borrowed ones.

Ship's builder Joseph Andrews was not officially part of the crew, but he always went on the maiden voyage of any of the vessels he had designed and built to check for any flaws, or make a note of anything that needed improving on or wasn't working properly. He was patrolling the corridors and gangways of the huge liner, scrutinising fixtures and fittings for any malfunction- he always stayed up late on the night before any of his vessels were due to dock, so that nobody could get any impression of a less than perfect vessel upon arrival.

In the onboard post office, the night clerks and sorters were busy stamping letters and weighing packages- down in the engine and boiler rooms, the night shift of stokers, firemen, trimmers and rakers were feeding the boilers with coal, checking the control gauges, adjusting regulators, and keeping the engines greased and maintained.
