All forms are caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis. The oriental rat flea carries this bacterium, and lives on the backs of rats. The flea inhales carbon dioxide exhaled from humans, and jumps through the air to feed on a new host. Back in the 1600's, people thought it was transmitted through the air, because the smell of the dead and dying was so awful. So The Oriental Rat Flea caused the black death, otherwise known as the plague.
disease spread by fleas which communicated the disease from rats and to humans.
The cause for the black death was the germs in fleas which lived in black rats. When the rats died, the infected fleas moved on to the humans, ultimately spreading the disease by each person they bite. Unsure of what was the cause, the population carried herbs in cloth which they held to their mouth so if others cough they won't get 'infected'.
