Women usually had an hourglass figure with broader shoulders, a small waist and narrow hips. Popular trends for teen girls were poodle skirts (full skirts which may or may not have a picture of a poodle on them) and blouses. Older men wore suits, though sweaters and sweater-vests became more popular. A trend among teen boys was often to wear tighter-fitting jeans, or a leather jacket (see James Dean).
