Henry's contribution? In many ways it is hard to assess ? To the poor who suffered from the economic decline he created it must have been enormous, to all those who became rich or even richer, he must have been a blessing from God, but for those thousands of Anglicans who turned out to defend the monasteries in the Pilgrimage of Grace, he was the devil incarnate! One thing Henry never gave up on, or surrendered was his authority or privilege!

But he made a contribution that is never acknowledged, at least I have never seen it mentioned, other than an odd comment. He and the English Church told the Pope that he had no authority in another bishop's see. This is true, it had caused the Orthodox to leave the Church, [1054,] this papal breaking of the rules, or canons. When HENRY, FOR WHATEVER REASON faced him with the truth, it must have caused the pope an enormous shock. Later when the pope called a Council at Trent,[ 1545,] to salvage something, he didn't invite English Bishops and thus, when the Roman Bishops added to the Deposit of faith, the English were lucky enough not to follow them in to heresy!
