At the time of the accident, Patton was sitting on the edge of the rear seat leaning forward looking out the right window. Upon impact, he was thrown into the partition dividing the front and rear seat. The others in the limo were all sitting back and were not seriously hurt. As a result, Patton cut a gash over his right eye and was paralyzed from the neck down.
