The biggest problem was disease and until the mosquitoe was taken care
of, progress on the canal couldn't move forward.

Also, the Panama Isthmus is a high ridge. The first attempt, by the French civil engineer de Lesseps, was at sea-level in the way he had successfully designed the Suez Canal; but failed due to the sheer difficulty and cost of cutting through the hill rather than using locks and feeder-rivers.

∙ 14y agoThe French first tried to build the canal, but failed for a number of reasons. Yellow fever and malaria were rampant, since it is a swampy area and it was difficult to keep enough healthy workers. There were also problems with engineering the canal.
