Original Sin, created by our original parents Adam and Eve occurred when they both ate of the forbidden fruit in Genesis 1 and 2. Baptism forgives the Original Sin, thus 'erasing' it. By erasing the stain of Original Sin, baptism opens the soul to receive the supernatural grace of God given to mankind via the Holy Spirit. Although this is slightly beyond topic: as with all sin, Original Sin is not without its consequences. To give you a parallel, one could commit a murder and be forgiven completely by God but the consequence remains that the victim's family must now go on without the victim. As such, Baptism may forgive the baptized of the sin but the effects of it remain. For Original Sin, there are four effects: darkening of the intellect (mankind doesn't know the fullness of himself or his actions), weakening of the will (mankind is unable to resist all sin), suffering (mankind must suffer), and death (mankind must die).
