After the events at khaybar, A Jewish women prepared poisoned meat for the Prophet (PBUH), of which he only tasted a morsel before warning the rest of his comrades. One Muslim had already swallowed a mouthful and died immediately. The Prophet himself became very ill from the mere taste of it. The woman who cooked the meat was brought before him and when she explained that she had done it on account of the humiliation of her people, he forgave her.

Three years latter, during that last pilgrimage, the surah from the Quran entitled "Succor" was revealed, which the Prophet (PBUH) received as an announcement of his forthcoming death. The news of his illness caused great sadness throughout Arabia. At early dawn on the last day of his earthly life he came out of his room beside the mosque at Al-Madinah and looked out onto the public prayer, which Abu-Bakr had been leading since his illness, and joined it. There was great relief among the people who thought he was getting better.

Latter in the day rumors spread that the prophet Mohammed (PBUH) had died. Panic spread throughout Al-Madinah and many grew angry at how such a lie could exist. Then Abu-Bakr, one of the prophets most dedicated follower and closest friends, went to the prophet's house and confirmed the death.

He then went out to the people and said:

"O people! Lo! As for him who worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad is dead. But as for him who worships Allah, Allah is Alive and dieth not."

He then recited the verse of the Qur'an:

(And Muhammad is but a messenger, messengers the like of whom have passed away before him. Will it be that, when he dieth or is slain, ye will turn back on your heels? He who turneth back doth no hurt to Allah, and Allah will reward the thankful.)

Many claim that because The Prophet didn't know the meat was poisoned he isn't a true messenger of god, for if he was he should've been warned. However, as it is stated many times in the Quran, all prophets are human who eventually meet their end. The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) fulfilled his duty and portrayed Allah's message and so Allah took his soul to the paradise He promised. Many other attempts on the Prophet's (PBUH) life had been made before the poisoning, and on those occasions he had been warned. That was when his duty as a messenger was still unfulfilled and so Allah preserved his life for that purpose.
