It was very accurate in many aspects of the war and how the Russians and Germans fought to capture and hold on to Stalingrad. The movie inserted dates that added a bit of history and it was accurate.

Stalin was the leader of Russia at the time, he ordered the Russian troops to Stalingrad to stop the Germans from their advance to Moscow. The Russian troops stopped all railways so Germans wouldn't have access to supplies. Hitler was the German Third Reich leader at the time as well and it was his army that pushed to Stalingrad to take over Russia.
A bit like how you expected. the outer approach to the city was small roads and fields towards the city and in it was all surrounded by buildings. The terrain of battle was mostly like tarmac and and concrete due to collapsed building and the actual foundation the city was built on.
