Most serfs were farmers. Some worked at other labor, as porters, unskilled helpers, foresters, teamsters, and so on. The women worked just as men did. Most of them lived in cottages, usually very simple, with only a single room, though there was a lot of regional variation. They were required to provide one or two days of work to their lords, in most places. They worked with other serfs on communal land, but had their own fields for their own use.
