In my opinion, the primary difference between the Christmas of yore and that of today is in the area of commercialism. Christmas observers, both secular and Christian, have succumbed to the calls of commercialism, especially in past decades. Christmas has become more about presents and less about the celebration of the birth of Jesus (the purpose for Christmas). Christmas has become a burdensome rush, rush, rush to get to the right store for the right item before competing customers get there first. In my opinion, this rush to meet the demands of commercialism have spoiled the true meaning of Christmas and I believe that Christmas observers from the 1800s weren't held to that bondage.
