The Louisiana Purchase was a land transaction between the United States and France in 1803, where the U.S. acquired 828,000 square miles of land from France. The purchase increased the size of the United States by almost a third, and it doubled the size of the country's western territory. This purchase was a major milestone in the history of the United States, as it set the stage for the exploration and settlement of the American West. As a result, the Louisiana Purchase also helped to establish the United States as a powerful nation in the world.

The Louisiana Purchase had several important results:

  • The United States gained control of the port at New Orleans, giving it access to the Gulf of Mexico.
  • The land that was acquired became known as the Louisiana Territory, and it would eventually become 15 new states.
  • The purchase extended the U.S. border to the Rocky Mountains, allowing for further exploration of the interior of the continent.
  • The U.S. was now able to regulate commerce on the Mississippi River, which was a major economic and transportation hub at the time.
  • The purchase also established a precedent of using diplomacy to resolve disputes, rather than relying on military force.

The Louisiana Purchase was a landmark event in American history, and its effects are still felt today. It allowed the United States to expand its borders and gain access to new resources, while also establishing the foundation for further exploration and settlement of the American West.

In 1803 Robert Livingston and James Monroe were sent to buy West Florida and New Orleans from the French. France, led by Napoleon, was in a mission to expand its empire, so they were firmly against selling their land. But an underdog victory in Haiti forced the French not just to sell what the Americans wanted but to sell the entire Louisiana Territory. The Americans bought the land for $15,000,000, only $5,000,000 more than they were going to buy New Orleans for. This purchase doubled the country in size and opened up a world of curiosity about the West.
